Personal Update and Going to NYC!

If the internet needs me, it will have to wait, because I’m heading to New York City tomorrow, sans laptop!

There’s been a lot happening in the weeks since we last talked, and frankly since dropping out of NaNoWriMo I’ve gotten very little writing done. It’s not like I’m not going to take responsibility for my lack of productivity, but I do have some very good excuses. Here’s a recap:

  • Chris’s truck broke down
  • My sister backed into my car on Thanksgiving Day, totaling the front of it
  • Chris’s truck broke down AGAIN
  • The cat we were house-sitting broke my Galileo thermometer, which had survived two cross-country moves but two days with her and it shattered.
  • The roof started leaking
  • I pulled an arm muscle moving tables around at the company Christmas party.
  • We found black widow spiders in the house
  • And worst of all, I was completely stuck with how to move forward on the zombie book rewrite.

(You can tell where my priorities are)

Having all this happen within the same 10-day period was pretty demoralizing. But, I had to turn back to the methods I know work to getting past writer’s block:

  • Getting enough sleep is KEY. When I’m swamped at my day job I have no energy left for writing at night unless I get at least 8 hours of sleep. As someone who likes to stay up reading late into the night, this is much harder than it sounds.
  • Read EVERYTHING. Read instead of watching TV. Read instead of surfing the internet. There can be no writing without reading, so READ. I had a goal on Goodreads of reading 50 books this year, and if I hadn’t slacked off last month I would have hit it already. As it is, I’m stuck at 40 and halfway through three pretty big books. I’m hoping the NY trip will get some of them finished off.
  • Wake up every morning and the first thought to yourself should be, “I am SO excited to write today! I am SO excited to write today!” It sounds silly, but it totally works.

I hope you all had a lovely and stress-free Thanksgiving! I will be taking lots of pictures of NYC (and the Lady Gaga store, aaahhh!). In the meantime, here’s a picture of my cat helping with the Christmas tree:

(You didn’t know I was a cat person, did you? Well, the knowledge couldn’t stay hidden forever.)

Oh no, I’m sorry that things have been less than ideal! Hopefully this trip to NYC will be just what you need. I want to visit NYC so badly. I’ve never been! I hope you have a wonderful time, though. And, oh, what an adorable photo – I love the lights! :D
